Life Story
Mary Coleman Montgomery was born on February 10, 1922, in the Altare community of Newton County, Mississippi, to Joe Coleman (1897–1965) and Ardell Evans Coleman (1897–1969). She grew up in a large and respected family deeply rooted in the Altare Missionary Baptist Church and the surrounding rural community.
By 1940, Mary had completed the 5th grade of elementary school, an achievement that reflected both her determination and her parents’ belief in the value of education during a time when opportunities for rural Black families were limited. She was known for her diligence and sense of responsibility from a young age.
By 1950, Mary was living in Newton County and was listed as separated from her husband. She worked 48 hours a week as a maid in a doctor’s office, a profession that required hard work and reliability. Her dedication to providing for her family exemplified the strength and perseverance that were hallmarks of the Coleman and Evans family legacies.
From her union came the following known children:
- Tommie George Montgomery (1942–2015)
- Johnnie Pearl Montgomery
Mary continued to live a life centered on family, faith, and community. She remained connected to her Altare roots, where generations of her family worshiped and worked together to build a strong sense of unity and pride.
She passed away on November 11, 2011, at the age of 89, and was laid to rest in the Altare M.B. Church graveyard in Newton County, Mississippi, among her loved ones and ancestors.
Her life serves as a reflection of perseverance, quiet dignity, and the enduring strength of the Coleman and Evans families who helped shape the fabric of the Altare community.
