Life and Legacy of Charlie Coleman
Charlie Coleman was born on February 20, 1943, in Newton County, Mississippi, into a close-knit rural community shaped by strong family ties, hard work, and deep faith. He came of age during a transformative period in Mississippi’s history, when many Black families were still rooted in agricultural life and community institutions like churches and local schools played central roles.
Throughout his life, Charlie was known for his quiet strength, steady character, and dedication to family. His roots in the Altare–Mt. Moriah community remained a defining part of his identity, even as he witnessed the social and economic changes that reshaped Mississippi from the 1940s through the early 21st century.
Charlie passed away on October 15, 2008, at the age of 65. His loss was deeply felt by relatives, friends, and all who knew him.
He was laid to rest with dignity and honor at the Evans Cemetery in Newton County, the historic burial ground of many members of the Evans, Coleman, and related families whose legacies continue to shape the community.
