Early Life
George F. Walker was born on February 22, 1933, in Newton County, Mississippi, to William Walker (1882–1948) and Cherrie Wash Walker (1903–1991). He was raised in a large farming household and, at an early age, worked as a farm helper, contributing to the family’s agricultural livelihood.
Education and Employment
As an adult, George relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana. His usual occupation was machine operator, and he was employed for several years at the Harrington Foundry. Earlier, prior to military service, he worked as a truck driver for the Mayfield Company in Indianapolis.
Military Service
George Walker was inducted into the United States Army on March 20, 1953. He served during the Korean War and was assigned to the Army’s 780th Field Artillery Battalion, Headquarters Battery, part of X Corps in Korea. His duties included service as a cannoneer, supporting artillery operations and combat readiness. He arrived in Korea in October 1953 and was honorably discharged on February 9, 1955.
Later Life
George never married. In his later years, he resided in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he received care at the Brookview Nursing Home. His life reflects the broader migration of Newton County families to Midwestern industrial cities during the mid-twentieth century, while maintaining strong ties to home.
Death and Burial
George F. Walker passed away on March 20, 2000, at the age of 67. The cause of death was myocardial failure due to cardiovascular disease. His sister, Mollie Walker Russell, served as the informant on the death record. He was laid to rest at St. John Graveyard, returning him to the community where his family’s roots were firmly established.
Survivors
He was survived by his brother Wilford Walker, and his sisters Willie Grace Walker Chapman, Ludie Mae Walker Watts, Geraldine Russell Ford, Mollie Walker Russell, Mamie Johnson, and Loraine Charles.
