Life Story

A Brief Life, Eternally Remembered

A Moment of Joy and Sorrow

The infant son of Jeff Evans (1895–?) and Annie Bell Chapman Evans (1898–?) was stillborn on October 15, 1925, in Newton County, Mississippi. His arrival, so eagerly anticipated, turned to heartbreak in an instant, leaving a deep and lasting sorrow that rippled through his family and the Altare community. The Evans and Chapman families, both long-rooted in the region, were known for their strength and endurance, and yet even their steadfast hearts were tested by the loss of a child whose life ended before it began.

Family Heritage

The infant’s lineage reflected generations of perseverance and faith. On his mother’s side, he was the grandson of John Chapman (1875–1953) and Lucindy Walker Chapman (1879–1958), pillars of the Altare community who helped shape its early development. His paternal grandparents, Gus Evans (1869–?) and Martha A. Evans (1874–?), were among those who carried the Evans name through times of hardship and progress, contributing to the legacy of faith and work that defined Newton County’s African American families during the early twentieth century.

When the child passed, John Chapman, his maternal grandfather, served as the informant on the death certificate—a somber duty that no parent or grandparent should have to bear. His signature marked not only the loss of a grandchild but also the fragility of life in an era when infant mortality was a painful reality for many families.

Resting Place and Reflection

The child was laid to rest in the Altare Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, surrounded by family who had come before and those who would follow. Beneath the shade of trees and the soft hum of Mississippi’s countryside, the family gathered to pray, to weep, and to find comfort in their shared faith.

Though his time on earth was fleeting, the memory of the infant son endures through the generations—woven into the family’s story as a symbol of love, hope, and the tender bond that unites even the briefest of lives with eternity.
