Life Story

Jetavion Markenyus Johnson, a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend, departed this life far too soon at the young age of eighteen. He was born on November 1, 2006, in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, and raised in Newton, where he created lasting memories with his family and friends.

On June 23, 2025, tragedy struck when Jetavion was fatally shot during a gender reveal party at Roosevelt State Park in Morton, near the pool area of the park. He sustained gunshot wounds to the stomach and was transported by personal vehicle to Scott Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Anthony Boyd of Pelahatchie was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.

Jetavion was a bright, spirited young man whose life touched many and whose potential was limitless. He was the cherished son of Brittany Johnson and Brandon Burkes. Though he faced life’s challenges, he met each day with resilience, hope, and a determination to succeed. From a young age, he displayed a passion for sports—excelling in both basketball and football, proudly representing Newton City during his youth.

Despite not graduating from high school, Jetavion was actively working toward earning his GED, demonstrating his commitment to personal growth and a brighter future. His next goal was to attend trucking school to obtain his CDL license, a dream he pursued with great enthusiasm. At the time of his passing, he was preparing to start a new job at a warehouse, a step he viewed as the beginning of his next chapter.

A hardworking and determined young man, Jetavion remained employed at KFC, expressing his dedication to stay until his new position was secured—a testament to his perseverance and sense of responsibility.

Beyond his ambitions, Jetavion was known for his warm smile, kind heart, and infectious energy. He loved spending time with family and friends, sharing laughter, and living life to the fullest. His love for sports reflected his competitive yet joyful spirit, and his presence brought light and laughter to those around him.

He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his mother, Brittany Johnson; siblings, Jemiryah Elizabeth Broadus, King Joseph Johnson, and Brenden Damu Roberts; grandparents, Elizabeth Johnson and Joseph Johnson; his aunt, Faymicka McCallum, and her daughter, Rickyra Mann. On his paternal side, he is survived by his father, Brandon Burkes; aunts, Bridget Estelle and Annie Burkes; uncle, Javion Burkes; grandmother, Judy Ann Kincaid; and a host of cousins—too many to name—on both sides of the family.

Jetavion was a young man full of promise, love, and ambition. Though his life was brief, his impact endures in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Funeral services for Jetavion Markenyus Johnson were held at Altare Missionary Baptist Church, where family and friends gathered to celebrate his life and honor his enduring legacy.
