Life Story

A Life of Faith, Family, and Grace in the Altare Tradition

Early Life and Family Background

Meldora Jackson Arrington was born on March 9, 1921, in Fannin, Mississippi, a small, close-knit town known for its strong sense of community and spiritual devotion. She was the beloved daughter of Mrs. Delia Patterson, who raised her with care, discipline, and faith at the center of their home. Growing up in rural Mississippi, Meldora’s early life was defined by simplicity, hard work, and a shared belief in perseverance and compassion — qualities that would shape her life and character in remarkable ways.

Her upbringing in Fannin exposed her to the strength of southern Black families in the early 20th century — rooted in faith, mutual support, and resilience. As a young girl, she joined the local Baptist Church, where she first began developing her enduring relationship with faith and community service.

Faith and Family Life

Seeking new opportunities, Meldora and her mother later moved to Newton, Mississippi, where she found both stability and purpose in a growing community of believers. She joined Morning Star Baptist Church, becoming an active and loyal member. Within the congregation, she contributed to missionary work, church programs, and youth mentorship. Her deep faith and commitment made her a beloved member, known for her compassion, kind words, and willingness to help others.

Meldora later married Charlie Arrington (1928–1971), son of Henry H. Arrington (1891–1988) and Isabella Walker Arrington (1895–1961). Through this union, Meldora became part of one of the most historically significant families in the Altare community — a family known for its leadership, faith, and generational devotion to the church. Her marriage symbolized the continued blending of spiritual and family legacies that defined Altare’s long history.

Illness and Passing

In the final months of her life, Meldora faced a serious illness that required extended hospitalization at Matty Hersee Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Physicians and nurses worked tirelessly to provide care, while her family remained faithfully by her side, offering love, comfort, and prayer. Despite every effort, Meldora’s condition worsened, and she passed away peacefully on October 6, 1966, at the age of 45.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband, Charlie Arrington, her devoted mother, Mrs. Delia Patterson, a brother, Lewis Jackson of Homestead, Florida, two aunts, and several other relatives and close friends who deeply mourned her loss.

Funeral services were held at the Altare Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. D. Hayden, her pastor. The congregation gathered in unity to celebrate her faith and service. Following the service, interment took place in the Altare M.B. Church Cemetery, where she was laid to rest among generations of family members who shared her devotion to God and community.

As a member of the extended Arrington family, Meldora’s life was woven into the greater fabric of Newton County’s religious and cultural history. Her work within Morning Star Baptist Church and later her connection to Altare Missionary Baptist Church continued a generational pattern of leadership and faith, passed down through the families that built and sustained these sacred institutions.
