Early Life and Family
Alex Lee Wash was born on June 9, 1952, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Lillie Mae “Miss Kate” Moncrief Phelps (1917–2004). He was raised within the Saint John community, where extended family networks and church life played a central role in daily life.
Family and Community Ties
Alex was part of the Moncrief–Phelps–Wash family line, a family deeply connected to Saint John Missionary Baptist Church. His upbringing reflects the strong matriarchal household led by his mother, who was widely known in the community as “Miss Kate.”
Later Years
In adulthood, Alex remained connected to Newton County and Saint John through family and long-standing community relationships. His life followed the generational pattern of continuity seen among many Saint John families.
Death and Burial
Alex Lee Wash passed away on May 6, 2021. He was laid to rest at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, alongside his mother and other relatives whose lives are documented within the same historic burial ground.
