Biography
Bertha Mae (Walker) Bender passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 14, 2020. She was the daughter of James Eugene Walker (1902–1978) and Lillie Mae McDonald Walker (1907–1994), a well-known St. John family whose members were active in church and community life.
On October 25, 1960, Bertha united in marriage to Sammie Bender (1938–?). From this union, twins Debrah and Donald Bender were born.
Faith and Community Service
Bertha was a devoted member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for many years. Newspaper records highlight her active roles:
- Secretary for the St. John Woman’s Day Program
