Life Story

A Life of Faith, Service, and Community Leadership

Birth and Family Origins

Christine McNair was born on June 13, 1927, in East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana, to John McNair and Candis Beddingfield McNair. According to a birth record later filed with the Indiana State Board of Health, she was born at 6:20 p.m.

The certificate lists the child as Alice McNair, but the birth date corresponds exactly with later records associated with Christine McNair, suggesting that the document likely refers to her. Such discrepancies in given names were not uncommon in early twentieth-century records, especially when births were recorded years later or when individuals used different names during their lifetime.

At the time of Christine’s birth:

  • John McNair, age 39, was working as a laborer and had been born in Newton County, Mississippi.
  • Candis Beddingfield McNair, age 37, was born in Leake County, Mississippi and was recorded as a housewife.

The birth certificate notes that Christine was the fifth child born to her mother, with four children living at the time of her birth. Although the document records her birth in East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana, it also lists her parents’ residence as Newton, Mississippi, and later records indicate that Christine spent most of her life in Newton County, Mississippi.

Early Life in Newton County

Christine grew up in the rural farming communities of Beat 4 in Newton County, where extended family networks were common.

The 1930 census records two-year-old Christine living with her parents and siblings in a multigenerational household that included her 70-year-old grandfather, Alex McNair.

Her siblings included:

By 1940, Christine was twelve years old and living with her family along the Newton–Conehatta Road in Newton County, an area known for its farming communities and strong church traditions.

Work and Young Adulthood

Like many young women raised in rural Mississippi, Christine contributed to the labor that sustained her family.

By 1950, at the age of 23, census records list her occupation as Farm Helper, working approximately 50 hours per week. Her work reflected the agricultural traditions of Newton County families, where daughters often shared in the responsibilities of maintaining the household and farm.

Marriage and Family Life

After the 1950 census, Christine married Nelson B. Bender (1929–1991). The couple settled in the Lawrence community of Newton County, where they raised their children and remained active in church and community life.

Their home became part of the close-knit network of families who supported one another through church, farming, and community events.

Leadership in the Church

Christine Bender became a respected figure in the religious life of Lawrence, Mississippi. Her leadership and service were frequently mentioned in church program reports published in local newspapers.

Among her contributions were:

Church School Superintendent

She served as Superintendent of Church School, overseeing the religious education of youth and coordinating Sunday school programs.

Women’s Day Programs

Christine was actively involved in organizing and participating in Women’s Day celebrations at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Lawrence. These gatherings brought together members from churches across the area and highlighted the leadership of women within the church.

One such event featured the theme “Walking in the Light” based on John 12:35. The program included participation from several church leaders and reportedly raised $2,000 in support of church work.

Another Women’s Day program centered around the theme “Where Is Woman’s Faith in Jesus Christ?” drawn from Hebrews 11:1–11. As Church School Superintendent, Christine helped lead the day’s activities, which began with Sunday school and included guest speaker Mrs. Walterine Denmark.

Through these programs, she worked alongside respected community leaders such as Mrs. G. T. Mann, Mrs. Ada E. Adkins, Mrs. Maude Denham, and Mrs. Selester McNair.

Later Years and Death

Christine McNair Bender remained deeply connected to the Lawrence community, where faith and family remained central to her life.

She passed away on December 30, 2008, at the age of 81. Christine was laid to rest at Union Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Lawrence, Mississippi, a historic cemetery that holds many members of the surrounding community.
