Life Story

Laid to Rest: Evans Cemetery – Newton County, Mississippi

Birth and Family

Cora Evans was born in January 1913 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Harry Evans (1883–1941) and Leila Walker Evans (1894–1969). She was born into the extended Evans and Walker families, whose roots run deeply through the Altare and Mt. Moriah communities.

Short Life and Passing

Cora’s life was brief. She passed away on October 31, 1913, at only a few months old. Her death certificate lists possible colitis—an inflammation of the colon common among infants in the early 1900s and often fatal due to limited medical access and inadequate treatments available at the time.

Her uncle Coyt Evans served as the informant, helping to ensure her short life was documented and remembered.

Burial and Legacy

Cora was laid to rest in the Evans Cemetery, where many members of her family are also buried. Though her time was short, her memory remains part of the larger Evans family story—one marked by resilience, deep kinship ties, and generations rooted in the land and history of Newton County.
