Life Story
Early Life
Dessie Ree Walker was born around 1907 in the Bethel Crossing community of Newton County, Mississippi. She was one of fifteen children born to John Wesley Walker (1870–?) and Fannie Moore Walker (1874–?). Growing up in a large rural family, Dessie’s early life was shaped by strong kinship networks and the traditions of the Walker and Moore families.
As a child, she joined St. John Baptist Church, beginning a life of faith that continued throughout her years.
Adult Life and Work
In her young adulthood, Dessie relocated to Fairbanks, Alaska, where she lived with her sister. While there, she worked as a civil service employee at a U.S. Air Force base, a notable achievement for Black women during that era and a testament to her independence and determination.
After decades of life and work away from Mississippi, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1993. There she lived with her great-niece and great-nephew-in-law, Vivian Michael and Larry Wilhoite, who cared for her during her later years.
Passing and Burial
Dessie Ree Walker passed away in early 1996, at the age of eighty-eight. Graveside services were held on March 13, 1996, at Evans Cemetery in Newton, Mississippi, with Rev. Bill Love officiating.
Though she had lived far from Mississippi for much of her life, she returned home in rest, joining generations of her Walker and Moore family ancestors.
Legacy
Dessie Ree Walker is remembered as a devoted sister, aunt, and community member. Her life—spanning Mississippi, Alaska, and Tennessee—reflects perseverance, service, and the enduring bonds of family. She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom remember her warmth and quiet strength.
