Life Story

Early Life

Dewitt Walker was born on April 18, 1908, in Newton County, Mississippi, to John Wesley Walker (1870–?) and Fannie Moore Walker (1874–?). He was one of the youngest members of a large family of fifteen children whose lives were rooted deeply in the Bethel Crossing and Altare communities.

Passing

Dewitt passed away in 1908, less than one years old. As with many infants of the early 20th century, the exact circumstances of his death were not recorded, reflecting both the limited medical care available in rural Mississippi and the vulnerability of young children during that era.

Burial

He was laid to rest in the Evans Cemetery, where many members of the Walker, Moore, Evans, and related families are also buried. Though his life was brief, his name remains preserved among the family’s historical record and contributes to understanding the full lineage of the Walker family.

Legacy

Dewitt Walker’s short life is a reminder of the challenges faced by families in the early 1900s, when infant mortality was tragically common. Through genealogical work, he is remembered and honored as part of the long and interconnected Walker family heritage.
