Early Life

Druecile Walker McCombs was born in Newton County, Mississippi, to Robert Walker (1893–1966) and Cordelia Donald Walker (1896–1966). She grew up in the St. John community with her many siblings, part of a well-known family whose roots run deep in the area.

Marriage and Family

Druecile married Richard McCombs. From this union, three daughters were born:

  • Zulla McCombs Hoose
  • Mabel McCombs Kenney
  • Leola McCombs Brown

Her commitment to her family extended across multiple states as she later relocated to Massachusetts.

Life in Springfield, Massachusetts

For approximately 11 years, Druecile lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, where she built a life and career. She was employed for 10 years as an inspector with Vamco, Inc. of West Springfield.

She was a faithful member of Third Baptist Church, maintaining her connection to Christian fellowship just as she had in her home community of St. John.

Death and Burial

Druecile passed away on January 23, 1968, at Municipal Hospital in Springfield at the age of 46. Funeral services were held at Harrell Funeral Home, and her body was returned to Mississippi for burial at St. John M.B. Church Cemetery.

She was survived by her husband, her three daughters, three brothers, six sisters, seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Date Discrepancy Note

There is a conflict between the obituary and the headstone date:

  • Newspaper obituary: January 23, 1968
  • Headstone inscription: 1969

Such discrepancies are not uncommon in genealogical research. The obituary is usually printed closest to the event and often more reliable for exact dates, while headstones can be inscribed later and occasionally contain errors. Both dates should be documented for accuracy, with the discrepancy clearly noted for future researchers.
