Life Story


Birth & Parentage

Edd Satchel, also known as Elbert Satchel, was born on September 15, 1891, to Wiley Satchel (1868–1918) and Fannie Evans Satchel (1875–?). He was born into a rural Newton County family rooted in agricultural labor.


Early Life & Occupation

In early life, Ed worked as a farm laborer on the home farm. By 1920, he was employed at an oil mill, where his occupation was listed as fireman. In 1940, he was again listed as working as a farmer. At that time, he reported having completed the 3rd grade of elementary school.


Marriage & Family

Ed Satchel was married to Geneva Satchel, and from this union the following children were born:

  • Sallie Satchel (1914–?)
  • Selfy Satchel (1917–?)
  • Edward Satchel (1918–?)

He later married Rhynia Satchel (1892–?), and from this union one son was born:

  • Sylvester Satchel (1924–?)
