Life Story
Musician, Churchman, and Community Figure of Newton County
George Edward Bender, affectionately known by his nickname “T.H.”, lived a life deeply rooted in the land, faith, and musical traditions of Newton County, Mississippi. His story reflects the everyday strength of rural Black communities where church, family, and music formed the center of community life.
Born on April 8, 1946, George was the son of Leo Bender and Bessie L. Harris Bender. He grew up in the Lawrence community of Newton County in a lively household along what local residents often referred to as “Poor House Road.” As the youngest child in the family, he was raised alongside his siblings N.B. Bender, Eva Lois Bender, and Joe Lee Bender. The Bender household was part of a close-knit network of families whose lives revolved around church, work, and community fellowship.
A Life of Faith and Music
Music and faith were central to George Bender’s life. Known throughout the community as a gifted guitarist, he devoted his musical talent to the service of the church. At Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, one of the longstanding congregations in the Lawrence area, George played guitar for the Male Choir, providing the rhythmic foundation that supported congregational singing and worship.
In many rural Mississippi churches, musicians were not simply performers; they were essential participants in the spiritual life of the congregation. George’s guitar accompanied countless hymns, spirituals, and gospel songs that shaped the worship experience for church members and visitors alike.
His musical reach extended beyond his home church. George was also a member of the gospel group The Harmoniers, performing within the broader gospel circuit that connected churches and community gatherings across the region. Through his playing, he helped sustain the powerful tradition of Mississippi gospel music, a style known for its emotional depth, rhythmic drive, and spiritual expression.
Whether in a church service, a revival meeting, or a local program, George’s guitar carried the sounds of faith and fellowship throughout the community.
Family Life and Community Roots
George built his life in the Lawrence community of Newton County, where he married Georgia Lee Simms. Their marriage created a home centered on family and faith, and together they raised three children:
- Taby Bender
- Beverly Bender
- Cory Bender
Like many families in rural Mississippi, the Benders were closely connected to church life and community gatherings, where music, worship, and family relationships intertwined.
George remained a lifelong resident of Mississippi. Records show that he received his Social Security number in the state in 1959, when he was just thirteen years old, and he continued to live in the Lawrence area for the rest of his life.
Final Years and Legacy
George Edward Bender passed away on October 5, 2002, at the age of 56. He was laid to rest at Union Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Lawrence, Newton County, Mississippi, a burial ground that holds generations of local families whose lives shaped the community.
Historical records sometimes vary on minor details—such as the spelling of his middle name or the racial classifications that appear in different databases—but within the community he was known simply and affectionately as “T.H.” That name carried the memory of a man whose life was defined not by official records, but by his presence among family, church members, and fellow musicians.
Through his music, George Edward Bender helped sustain one of the most enduring traditions of the South: the blending of gospel faith, community fellowship, and musical expression. His guitar, played in church choirs and gospel gatherings, formed part of the soundtrack of Newton County’s spiritual life.
His legacy lives on in the family he raised, the music he shared, and the church community he faithfully served.
