Life Story
Early Life
George Warren was born on December 25, 1893, in Newton County, Mississippi. He was the son of Jack Warren (1858–?) and Cora Warren (1864–?), members of a long-standing community of African American families who lived and farmed in the region.
Marriage & Family
George married Nancy Evans (1887–?), whose family roots were closely tied to the Evans Settlement and surrounding communities. From this union, one known child was born:
- Rosy Evans (1908–?)
The families remained closely connected, a relationship reflected in later records.
Occupation
George worked as a farmer, supporting his household through agricultural labor typical of rural Newton County in the early 20th century.
Military Service
George served his country in World War I, enlisting between 1917 and 1919. His service placed him among the many African American soldiers who contributed to the wartime effort despite facing segregation and racial barriers.
Death
George Warren passed away on November 11, 1922, at the age of 28. His cause of death was recorded as autointoxication, a medical term of the period referring to internal poisoning resulting from the body’s inability to eliminate its own toxins.
The informant on the death certificate was Henry Evans, the brother of his wife Nancy.
Burial
George was laid to rest in the Evans Cemetery, where many members of the Evans and Warren families are interred.
