Life Story
Early Life
Howard Thames was born on October 18, 1907, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Robert Thames (1877–?) and Janetta Payne Thames (1890–?). Raised in a large family rooted in the rural communities of Newton and Union, Howard grew up working the land, a way of life that would shape his entire adulthood.
Education and Early Work
Howard completed the 5th grade of elementary school, which was a considerable achievement for African American children in early 20th-century Mississippi. Like many young men of his time, he began working early in life, devoting 50 hours per week to farm labor. His occupation during his working years was consistently recorded as farmer, a role he maintained through perseverance and dedication.
Marriage and Family
First Marriage
Howard’s first marriage was to Gertrude Tingle Thames (1911–?). From this union, three daughters were born:
- Myrtis Louise Thames (1926–2007)
- Etoile Thames (born 1928–?)
- Mary Windham of New Jersey
Second Marriage
Howard later married Annie Jane Edwards Thames (1948–2001), who remained his devoted wife until his death.
Community & Religious Life
Howard was a faithful and active member of Midway Baptist Church in Decatur, Mississippi, where he remained committed until his passing.
He was also a member of East End Temple Lodge #476 in Meridian, Mississippi, demonstrating a life of service, fellowship, and community involvement.
Siblings
Howard was part of a large sibling group. Survivors listed in his obituary included:
- Sisters: Elma Walk of Union and Emma Norman of Newton
- Brothers: Alvin Thames, Bunyan Thames of Chicago, Bertis Thames, and Portman Thames of Union
In addition to his children, he was blessed with:
- Nine grandchildren
- Twenty-nine great-grandchildren
- Fourteen great-great-grandchildren
- And a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends
Later Years and Passing
Howard Thames passed away on March 2, 1996, at the age of 88, at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Funeral services were held on March 7 at Midway Baptist Church in Decatur, with Rev. Leo Clemons officiating.
He was laid to rest in the Evans Cemetery, joining generations of Thames, Evans, and Edwards kin.
Legacy
Howard Thames lived a long life marked by hard work, faith, and deep family connections. From his years as a farmer to his involvement in church and lodge life, he left an enduring legacy of resilience and devotion. His many descendants continue to reflect the strength of the family he built and nurtured.
