Life Story

Birth & Family Origins

Katie Mae Frost Wesley was born on July 3, 1912, to Grover Cleveland Frost (1885–?) and Sallie Johnson Frost (1890–?). She was raised in Newton County, Mississippi, within a rural farming community where family labor and cooperation were essential to daily life.

Education & Early Life

In early life, Katie Mae worked as a laborer on the farm, contributing to agricultural tasks from a young age. She completed the third grade of elementary school, reflecting the limited educational opportunities available to African American children in rural Mississippi during the early twentieth century.

Marriage & Family

Katie Mae married George Wesley (1909–1975). Together, they built a large family rooted in hard work, faith, and community ties. From this union, the following children were born:

  • Sallie Wesley (1932–?)
  • Joe F. Wesley (1935–?)
  • Easter Lee Wesley (1936–1973)
  • William Curtis Wesley (1938–1992)
  • Charles Wesley, Jr. (1939–?)
  • Katie Lou Wesley (1941–?)
  • Glenn Wesley (1941–?)
  • James O. Wesley (1946–?)
  • Josephine Wesley (1948–?)
  • Rosa Lee Wesley

Katie Mae played a central role in raising her children during a period when economic stability depended heavily on family labor and shared responsibility.

Occupation

By 1950, Katie Mae’s occupation was listed as keeping house. Like many women of her generation, her work encompassed household management, childrearing, food preparation, and support of the family’s farming and labor efforts—contributions that were essential but often undocumented.

Death & Burial

Katie Mae Frost Wesley passed away on November 9, 1958. She is laid to rest at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, alongside her family and many others who formed the core of the Saint John community.
