Life Story
Lela Mae Coleman Jordan was born around 1925 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Joe Coleman (1897–1965) and Ardell Evans Coleman (1897–1969). She was raised in a close-knit family that valued hard work, faith, and compassion—principles that would guide her throughout her life. From a young age, Lela contributed to her family’s livelihood, working alongside her parents in the fields. By 1940, she had completed the fourth grade of elementary school, balancing education with the many responsibilities of rural life during that era.
As she grew older, Lela’s strong sense of duty and kindness endeared her to everyone who knew her. She later married Howard Jordan (1930–2000), forming a partnership built on love, respect, and shared faith. Together, they raised a devoted family and cultivated a home where warmth and laughter were abundant. Their union was blessed with four children:
- Gloria Spivey
- Ralph Jordan
- Mary Dyre
- Cinda Adams.
Lela was not only a loving wife and mother but also a woman of faith and quiet strength. She was known for her generosity, her steady presence in times of need, and her commitment to her church and community. Her hands, once calloused from labor in the fields, became instruments of care and comfort for her family and friends.
In her later years, Lela continued to embody the virtues instilled in her by her parents—humility, perseverance, and faith in God. Her life was a testament to the enduring spirit of the Coleman and Evans families, whose legacy of love and resilience she carried forward.
After a long and full life, Lela passed away on March 18, 2009, surrounded by the love of her family. Funeral services were held at Altare Missionary Baptist Church, where she had worshiped faithfully, and interment took place in the church graveyard beside her beloved husband, Howard.
Those who knew Lela remember her gentle voice, her unwavering faith, and the deep affection she showed to everyone she encountered. Her legacy continues through her children, grandchildren, and extended family, who cherish her memory as a guiding light of love and strength.
