Birth and Family Background
Lula Pearl Moore Boulton was born on September 12, 1933, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Smith (Jig) Moore and Eva Haney Moore. She was reared in a large, close-knit Moore family whose roots were deeply planted in Newton County soil.
Early Work and Migration
In 1950, Lula Pearl was employed as a maid in a private home, reflecting the limited employment opportunities available to many African American women in the postwar South. Seeking broader opportunity, she later relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, where she established a long and stable career.
She retired after 30 years of service in nutritional services with Memphis City Schools.
Marriage and Faith
Lula Pearl married Harvey William Boulton (1924-1991) in 1971, and together they made their home in Memphis; she was widowed in 1991.
A woman of deep faith and commitment, she was a devoted member of Carver Heights Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as president of the Mother Board. Her leadership reflected dignity, spiritual strength, and dedication to her church community.
Family Legacy
She was preceded in death by her husband. She leaves behind a large circle of siblings and extended family, including sisters Doretha Moore of Moultrie, Georgia; Mattie L. Jordan, Annie Rose Robinson, and Gracie Evans, all of Newton, Mississippi; and Bonnie Banks of Los Angeles, California. She also leaves brothers George Moore of Moultrie, Georgia; John Moore of Tipton, Georgia; Rev. Purvis Moore, Edward Moore, and Archie Moore, all of Newton; Frank Moore of Jackson, Mississippi; and Howard Moore of Louisiana.
Style and Personality
Within the Moore-Haney family, Lula Pearl was known as a fashion icon. At family reunions, no one could outdress her in a fashion show. She carried herself with elegance, confidence, and flair—qualities that made her unforgettable to those who knew her.
Death and Burial
Lula Pearl Moore Boulton passed away on February 4, 2000, in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, at Methodist Hospital North. Funeral services were held at First Gethsemane Baptist Church, with burial in Memphis National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to J.O. Patterson Mortuary.
