Life Story
Early Life and Family
Mary Jane Moncrief Chapman was born on January 21, 1922, to Matthew Moncrief (1895–?) and Larcenia Wheaton Moncrief (1896–1970). Following her mother’s divorce, the 1930 census shows Mary Jane living with her mother and siblings in the household of their grandparents, reflecting the family restructuring common during that period.
Marriage and Child
Mary Jane married Robert H. Chapman (1916–1986). From this union, one child was born:
- Clinton Chapman (1946–1968)
Clinton Chapman later served in the Vietnam War, where he lost his life while in military service.
Later Years and Employment
By 1950, Mary Jane was separated from her husband and employed as a maid, working approximately 35 hours per week. Her work history reflects the limited employment opportunities available to African American women of her generation, many of whom supported themselves and their families through domestic labor.
Death and Burial
Mary Jane Moncrief Chapman passed away on March 8, 2001. She is laid to rest at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, alongside members of her extended family.
