Life Story

Minnie Hughes Evans was born on February 7, 1920, in Newton County, Mississippi, to John Hughes (1874–1966) and Arbella Arrington Hughes (1880–1959). Raised in the rural Altare community, Minnie grew up in a farming household where she developed the enduring values of faith, discipline, and perseverance. Like many children of her generation, she contributed to the family’s livelihood by assisting with agricultural work and did not complete formal schooling.

Around 1934, at approximately fourteen years of age, Minnie married Jessie Love (1915–1969). Two children were born to this union:

  • Gracie Love (b. 1935)
  • Jessie Love, Jr. (1937–1993).

By 1940, Minnie and Jessie had divorced, and Minnie later married Roy Beal (1897–1967). The couple resided in Smith County, Mississippi, where their son, Roy Beal, Jr. (b. 1945), was born.

As the 1950s approached, Minnie returned to Newton County and subsequently married Tob Williams (1907–?). Around 1954, she relocated to Flint, Michigan, where she entered into marriage with J.B. Evans. In Flint, Minnie became a devoted member of Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, serving faithfully on the Mother’s Board. Her spiritual life was marked by dedication to prayer, worship, and community service.

Outside of church, Minnie worked in housekeeping at Flint Osteopathic Hospital. She was known for her kind and nurturing nature, her ever-present smile, and her words of wisdom, which endeared her to family, friends, and church members alike.

Minnie passed away peacefully on April 3, 2004, at the age of 84, at Heritage Manor in Flint, Michigan. Funeral services were held at Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Morris Collins officiating. She was laid to rest at Gracelawn Community Cemetery.

She is remembered with love by her children: Grace Evans, May Chapman, Lula Nelson, Julia Guise, and May Glen (Lawrence) Jordan of Jackson, MS; her son, Roy (Paulette) Beal of Chicago, IL; three stepdaughters, Dorothy (Jake) Richardson, Bobbie Young, and Florine (Hosie) Allen; and one stepson, Willie Evans of Indianapolis, IN. Her circle of dear friends included Mildred Higgins and her husband, Mother Bell, and Annie Curry.

Minnie was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Evans; her son, Jessie Love, Jr.; her parents, John and Arbella Hughes; stepparents and grandparents; nine sisters; and two brothers. Her legacy endures through the generations of family and community who cherish her memory.
