Biography

Early Life

Mollie Mae Walker was born on June 22, 1931, in Newton County, Mississippi, to William Walker (1882–1948) and Cherrie Wash Walker (1903–1991). She grew up in a large farming family rooted in the Pleasant Grove and St. John communities of Newton County.


Marriage and Family

On August 20, 1949, she married Clifton Russell (born 1930). Following their marriage, the couple relocated to Marion, Indiana. From this union, three children were born:

  • Michael L. Russell
  • Kevin Dewayne Russell
  • Angela R. Russell Rowe

Education and Occupation

After moving to Indiana, Mollie worked as a housekeeper in her early adult years. She later built a long and stable career as an administrative assistant with the U.S. Army Finance and Accounting Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis. She retired from federal service in 1979, reflecting decades of clerical and administrative work within the military support system.


Church and Community Life

Mollie Mae Walker Russell was a devoted member of Gabriel Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained active throughout her adult life. Her church affiliation connected her to a broader network of Walker and Russell family members who settled in Indianapolis during the Great Migration era.


Later Life

In her later years, Mollie resided in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was closely connected to her children, grandchildren, and extended family, maintaining ties to both Indiana and her Mississippi roots.


Death and Burial

Mollie Mae Walker Russell passed away on September 2, 2002, at Community Hospital at the age of 71. The cause of death was a cerebral vascular accident. Her husband, Clifton Russell, served as the informant on her death record.

Funeral services were held on September 7, 2002, at Gabriel Missionary Baptist Church, with visitation the evening prior. She was laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Lavenia, Smith and Summers Home for Funerals.


Survivors

She was survived by her husband Clifton Russell; her children Michael L. Russell, Kevin Dewayne Russell, and Angela R. Russell Rowe; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her brother Wilford Walker; and her sisters Ludie Mae Walker Watts, Geraldine Russell Ford, Mamie Johnson, and Lorraine Charles.
