Life Story
Early Life and Family Ties
Nancy Harris was born in Mississippi on June 14, 1894. She was the daughter ofLonnie Lee (Millie) Anderson. In the 1900 Census, she is listed as Nancy Monger, a five-year-old stepchild living in the household of Tom Anderson. By 1910, she was identified as Nancy Anderson, working as a laborer on the family farm.
Marriage and Household
Around 1919, Nancy married Cleveland Harris. The 1920 Census shows them living on Wilkins Street in Lake, Scott County, where Nancy was described as “Mulatto” and had gained the ability to read and write. By 1930, the couple had moved back to Beat 4 in Newton County. While the 1930 Census suggests her father was born in Alabama, her earlier records firmly tie her upbringing to the Anderson family of Newton.
Land Ownership and Community Standing
Nancy became a woman of property and responsibility. In 1965, she and Marshall Anderson (her step-brother) entered into a significant land agreement in Section 33 of Newton County. This indicates a lifelong bond between Nancy and her Anderson siblings, as she and Marshall jointly managed family interests’ decades after their parents’ era.
Faith and Final Years
Nancy was a dedicated member of the Church of God in Christ No. 2. Her passing was marked by the community with deep sympathy extended to the Harris and Williams families. Her funeral was held at Union Chapel Methodist Church, the same location where her stepfather, Tom Anderson, was laid to rest.

A Trustee’s Notice of Sale published in April 1968 references a Deed of Trust executed on April 30, 1965, by Nancy Harris and Marshall Anderson to D. M. Anderson, Trustee.
