Life Story
Early Life and Family
Omigene Curry was born on November 3, 1930, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Carlton Curry (1888–1962) and Sarah Williams Curry (1893–1969). She was raised in a close-knit rural community where family, church, and school formed the foundation of daily life.
As the daughter of Carlton and Sarah, Omigene grew up during the Great Depression, a time when Black families in Newton County relied heavily on one another and on their faith communities for stability and support.
Illness and Passing
At the age of twelve, Omigene’s life was tragically cut short. She passed away on October 6, 1943. The cause of death was listed as anemia, secondary to recurrent nosebleeds that had persisted for the previous five months. In an era before advanced diagnostic testing and specialized pediatric care, such conditions could become life-threatening.
Her death represents the vulnerability of childhood in the early twentieth century, when even treatable conditions today could prove fatal.
Burial and Remembrance
Omigene Curry was laid to rest at Union Chapel Methodist Church graveyard in Newton County, Mississippi. Though her life was brief, her memory remains preserved within the Curry family lineage and the sacred ground of Union Chapel.
Her story stands as a quiet reminder of the children whose lives were shortened too soon, yet whose place in family history remains enduring.
