Early Life and Family
Ora Dee Chapman May was born on January 26, 1940, to Dump Chapman (1893–1980) and Nellie Loper Chapman (1903–1995). She was raised within a family rooted in the Saint John community and its extended kinship networks.
Marriage and Children
Ora Dee’s first marriage was to Rufus Bender (1935–1980). From this union, three children were born:
- Richard Bender (1961–2016)
- Ruthie May Bender (1962–2017)
- Regina Bender (born 1963)
Tragically, her husband Rufus Bender passed away in an automobile accident in 1980.
Ora Dee later remarried Fred Edward May (1946–1996), with whom she shared her later adult years.
Later Years and Death
Ora Dee Chapman May passed away on November 30, 2019. She was laid to rest at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, alongside generations of family members whose lives are closely connected to the church and surrounding community.
