Life Story
Early Life in Newton County
Pringle Hardy was born around 1900 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Floyd Hardy and Bettie (Betsy) Beal Hardy.
In the 1900 census, he appears as a four-month-old infant living with his parents and older siblings Annie, Floyd Jr., and Clinton. He was raised in Beat 4 within a farming household where children contributed early to agricultural labor and family survival.
By 1910, at ten years old, Pringle was recorded as a farm laborer on the family farm — a common designation for rural boys of his generation. Despite these responsibilities, census records indicate that he had learned to read, reflecting his family’s commitment to education during a period when schooling opportunities for Black children were limited.
Illness and Final Years
Around 1913, when he was approximately thirteen years old, Pringle contracted tuberculosis. At the time, tuberculosis was one of the most devastating illnesses in Mississippi, particularly in rural communities with limited medical resources.
He battled the disease for nearly three years under the care of Dr. J. J. Tatum.
Pringle passed away on November 1, 1916, at the age of sixteen. His death certificate lists his occupation as “School boy,” a simple but poignant record of a life still in formation.
Burial and Enduring Memory
Pringle was laid to rest at Sand Ridge, likely in the cemetery associated with Sand Ridge Missionary Baptist Church — the same burial ground where his mother would be interred a decade later.
Though his life was brief, his memory endured within the family. His sister Lottie honored him by naming her firstborn son after her brother. In doing so, she carried his name forward into the next generation, ensuring that “Pringle” would not disappear from the Hardy lineage.
In communities where formal memorials were rare, names themselves became monuments.
Pringle Hardy’s years were few, but his presence remains preserved in census records, medical documentation, and in the living continuity of the name he left behind.
