Life Story

A Life Marked by Struggle, Redemption, and Faith

Early Life in Newton County

Robert Grass, Jr. was born on November 22, 1961, in the historic town of Newton, Mississippi, to Robert Grass, Sr. (1940–2004) and Sallie Thames Grass (1944–2008). Raised in a close-knit community known for its deep family ties and cultural traditions, Robert grew up surrounded by the familiar rhythms of small-town Southern life. He attended the Newton Public School System, where he forged friendships that carried into adulthood.

Challenges and Turning Points

In 1996, Robert faced a difficult and defining moment in his life when he was rearraigned and entered a guilty plea to a charge of receiving stolen property taken from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ron James. The situation sent shockwaves through the community, as Robert had been viewed as dependable and well-regarded.

The court sentenced him to three years of confinement, a $1,000 fine, court costs, and five years of probation, with one year suspended contingent upon his cooperation in providing truthful testimony in related cases. This period marked a painful turning point for Robert, as he came face-to-face with the consequences of his choices and the effect they had on his family and those who cared for him.

Despite the public nature of these challenges, Robert navigated this chapter with humility, introspection, and a growing desire to reshape the course of his life.

Embracing Faith and Ministry

In the years that followed, Robert’s life took on new meaning through spiritual transformation. He found purpose and renewal in ministry, dedicating himself to sharing messages of hope, forgiveness, and resilience. His commitment to faith reflected his desire to rise above past mistakes and to guide others away from similar pitfalls.

Those who knew him closely remember a man who wrestled openly with his flaws but worked earnestly to help, encourage, and uplift others.

Final Years and Passing

Robert Grass, Jr. passed away on October 14, 2015, at the age of 53. His death brought sorrow to family and friends who remembered his complex yet deeply human journey — a life marked by struggle, accountability, and transformation.

He was laid to rest in the peaceful graveyard of Altare M.B. Church, a place intertwined with the legacy of many generations of the Grass, Thames, and Evans families. Surrounded by towering trees and familiar soil, Robert found his final rest in the community that had shaped him from the beginning.
