Life Story
Rosie Mary Towner Johnson was born on April 24, 1953, in Newton County, Mississippi, a community known for its strong family ties and deep-rooted faith. She was the daughter of Willie Lee Towner (1907–1966) and Mary Lou Arrington Lindsey Towner (1912–1977). Her maternal grandparents were Henry H. Arrington (1891–1988) and Isabella Walker (1895–1961), and her paternal grandparents were Claiborne Towner (1864–1937) and Arilla Lucy Thorton (1873–?).
Raised in a large and loving family, Rosie grew up surrounded by the values of faith, service, and togetherness that defined both the Towner and Arrington lineages. Her early life in Newton County was filled with the warmth of family gatherings, church services, and the simple joys of rural life that shaped her character and compassion for others.
On May 1, 1974, Rosie married Charles R. Johnson, and from their union two children were born. The couple later made their home in Harris County, Texas, where Rosie worked hard to provide for her family while remaining true to her Mississippi roots. After their divorce on June 15, 1989, Rosie returned to Decatur, Newton County, determined to rebuild her life surrounded by the comfort of family and community.
Rosie was known for her warm heart, cheerful spirit, and love of people. She found joy in cooking for others and sharing good conversations, gifts she shared abundantly through her work at Spanky’s Restaurant in Decatur. Her kindness and welcoming nature made her a beloved presence among friends, co-workers, and family alike.
On February 2, 2001, at the age of 47, Rosie passed away. Funeral services were held at Pine Ridge Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, with Rev. J. L. Robinson officiating. She was laid to rest in the Pine Ridge Graveyard, surrounded by the same community that had nurtured her life and faith.
Rosie was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Willie and Mary Lou Towner; brothers Excel, John L., Melvin, and Leroy; and a sister, Willie M. She is survived by thirteen devoted siblings: Irene Nichols of Newton; Albert Towner of Raleigh; Costello Towner of Decatur; Vera M. Patrick and Wilma Patrick of Decatur; Annie P. Morris of Decatur; Ruby Lindsey and Willie C. Lindsey of Newton; Allene Russell of Mobile; Alma Jane Patterson of Detroit; Vonnie L. Holton of Benton Harbor, Michigan; Claiborne Towner of Flint, Michigan; and Rev. S. B. Towner of Union.
Rosie’s life was a reflection of quiet strength and love — a testament to the enduring spirit of family, faith, and perseverance that continues to define the generations she left behind.
