Life Story
Ruthie Mae Coleman Johnson was born on August 19, 1927, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Joe Coleman (1897–1965) and Ardell Evans Coleman (1897–1969). She grew up in a nurturing and faith-filled household in the Altare community, surrounded by extended family whose lives were deeply rooted in the values of hard work, devotion, and togetherness.
By 1940, Ruthie had completed the third grade of elementary school, a common educational milestone for many children in rural Mississippi during that era, as family responsibilities often came early. Her formative years were marked by the rhythms of country life—helping with chores, attending church, and learning the lessons of faith and perseverance that would sustain her in adulthood.
By 1950, Ruthie was married to Tommie Johnson (1927–2004), forming a union that would be blessed with seven children:

- Annie Jewel Johnson (1951–2004)
- Emma Johnson Husband
- James C. Johnson
- Allen Johnson
- Larry Johnson
- Billy Johnson
Ruthie was known for her strength of spirit and quiet kindness. She balanced the many demands of motherhood with grace, raising her children with love and instilling in them the same principles that had guided her own upbringing—faith, family, and endurance.
On December 22, 1979, Ruthie passed away at the age of 52. Funeral services were held at Altare Missionary Baptist Church in Newton, with Rev. J. L. Hunter officiating. She was laid to rest in the Altare Church graveyard, among generations of family members whose lives were closely intertwined with the church’s enduring legacy.
Ruthie was survived by her children—two daughters, Mrs. Emma J. Husband of Newton and Miss Annie Jewel Johnson of Flint, Michigan; and five sons, Charles Johnson, James C. Johnson, Allen Johnson, Larry Johnson, and Billy Johnson—as well as numerous relatives and friends who cherished her memory.
Her life was a reflection of faith, devotion, and perseverance—a shining thread in the enduring fabric of the Coleman, Evans, and Johnson family legacy.
