Early Life and Family
S. M. Evans, commonly known as Sam Evans, was born on October 6, 1912, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Pete Evans (1888–1988) and Lula McDonald Evans (1894–2006). He was raised in a large farming household where shared labor, discipline, and faith shaped daily life.
Education and Work
Sam Evans completed the sixth grade of elementary school. Like many children of farming families in rural Newton County, his formal education was limited by economic necessity and seasonal agricultural demands.
In early life, he worked as a farm laborer, contributing to the survival and stability of the Evans household through physical labor and shared responsibility.
Church Membership
He was a faithful member of Altare Missionary Baptist Church, maintaining strong ties to the church community throughout his life.
Marriage and Children
S. M. Evans was once married to Maude Lindsey (1912–1994). According to Maude Lindsey’s obituary, one child was born from this union:
- Lovie Mae Evans (1930–2019)
In addition, Sam Evans was the father of Lee Evans. However, the identity of Lee Evans’ mother is currently unknown, and no record has yet been located that definitively documents that relationship.
Later Years and Death
S. M. Evans passed away on October 7, 1988, at Rolling Acres Nursing Home. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 12, at Altare M.B. Church, with Rev. J. L. Hunter officiating.
He was laid to rest at St. John Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, joining multiple generations of the Evans family.

- His mother, Mrs. Lula Evans
- One son, Lee Evans
- Seven brothers:
- Rev. Theron Evans, Clyde Evans, and James Lee Evans, all of Newton, Mississippi
- Rafe Evans, J. P. Evans, and Carl Evans, all of Detroit, Michigan
- Tasker Evans, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania
- Five grandchildren
- Two great-grandchildren
- A host of nieces and nephews
