Life Story
Early Life in Newton County, Mississippi
Sophia “Sophie” Evans Dungen was born on March 10, 1931, in Mississippi, the daughter of Sam Evans and Lillian Evans. Her Social Security record gives March 10, 1931, as her birth date, a year consistent with the 1950 United States Census, which recorded her as nineteen years old. Her 1955 Louisiana marriage certificate gives the same month and day but reports her birth year as 1935 and her birthplace as Lawrence, Mississippi. The weight of the available evidence supports 1931 as the more likely year of birth.¹
Sophie was one of eleven children born to Sam and Lillian Evans. Her siblings were Mattie, Ed, Lorene, Ovetta, Annie, Freenell, Irma, Willie, Sam Jr., and Johnny Evans. She grew up in the rural communities of Newton County as part of a large African American farming family.
The 1940 United States Census recorded Sophie living with her parents and siblings in Newton County. She was attending school and had completed the second grade.² Her childhood unfolded within the same agricultural environment experienced by her brothers and sisters, where the older members of the household contributed to the work necessary to sustain the family farm.
The 1940 census is also important in evaluating Sophie’s uncertain birth year. Her age and schooling in that census, when considered alongside later records, make a birth around 1931 more consistent with the overall documentary evidence than the 1935 date she later reported when she married.¹
Leaving Her Parents’ Household
By 1950, Sophie had left Sam and Lillian’s household, although she remained close to her family and had moved only into neighboring Smith County, Mississippi.
The 1950 census recorded nineteen-year-old Sophie living along Otho Jones Road in the household of her older sister Lorene Evans Moffett and Lorene’s husband, Leo Moffett. She was identified as Leo’s sister-in-law.³
Sophie was also working on the Moffett farm. The census classified her as an unpaid family farm worker and recorded that she had worked forty hours during the preceding week.³
Her presence in Lorene’s household provides a glimpse of the relationships that continued to connect the Evans siblings as they entered adulthood. Sophie had left her parents’ home, but she remained within an extended family household and continued working in the rural agricultural economy in which she had been raised.
Within only a few years, however, her life would change considerably.
From a Mississippi Farm to New Orleans
By 1955, Sophie had moved from rural Mississippi to New Orleans, Louisiana.
Her marriage certificate provides a particularly valuable snapshot of her life in the city. Before her marriage, Sophie lived at 424 Burgundy Street in New Orleans and worked as a nurse’s aide.⁴
The transition was significant. Only five years earlier, the federal census had recorded her working without wages on a farm in Smith County. By 1955, she was living independently in one of the South’s largest cities and working in a paid health-care occupation.
The marriage certificate also identifies her parents as Sam Evans and Lillian Saywar, both born in Mississippi. The spelling “Saywar” represents another variation of Lillian’s maiden name, which appears differently across surviving family records.⁴
Marriage to John Calvin Dungen
While living in New Orleans, Sophie met John Calvin Dungen, a young insurance agent and native of the city.
John was born on December 30, 1934, in New Orleans, the son of Herman Dungen and Lucille Edgerson. At the time of his marriage, he worked as an insurance agent and lived at 1029 North Derbigny Street.⁴
Sophie and John were issued their marriage certificate on September 28, 1955. Three days later, on October 1, 1955, at five o’clock in the afternoon, they were married in New Orleans. Rev. A. M. Lewis, a Baptist minister, performed the ceremony. Both bride and groom reported that they had never previously been married.⁴
Sophie signed the marriage certificate in her own hand as “Sophie Evans.”
By the following year, the couple had established a household together. The 1956 New Orleans city directory listed John K. Dungen and his wife, Sophia, at 2536 St. Anthony Street. The directory further identified John as an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company.⁵
Together, the marriage record and city directory allow Sophie’s early years in New Orleans to be reconstructed with unusual clarity: she arrived in the city, worked as a nurse’s aide, married an insurance agent, and established a household of her own.
Part of a Family on the Move
Sophie’s relocation to New Orleans was part of a broader pattern that eventually dispersed members of Sam and Lillian Evans’s family far beyond the rural communities where they had been raised.
Some of the Evans children remained near their Newton County roots. Others established homes elsewhere in Mississippi or left the state entirely.
Sophie herself did not remain permanently in New Orleans. At some point during her adult life, she continued west and eventually settled in San Diego, California.
By 1983, her residence in California can be documented through the death notice of her sister Freenell Evans. When Freenell died that year, the Hattiesburg American identified Sophia Dungen of San Diego, California, as one of her surviving sisters.⁶
That same notice demonstrates how widely separated the surviving Evans siblings had become. Their brothers Ed and Willie Evans remained in Lawrence, Mississippi; their sister Lorene Moffett lived in Taylorsville, Mississippi; Mattie Jones lived in Chicago, Illinois; and Sophia Dungen was living on the opposite side of the country in San Diego.⁶
The children who had once shared Sam and Lillian Evans’s rural Mississippi household were by then scattered from Mississippi to the Midwest and Pacific Coast.
Later Years in California
The records presently available reveal less about Sophie’s years in California than about her earlier life in Mississippi and Louisiana. Nevertheless, San Diego had become her home by at least the early 1980s.
Sophia Evans Dungen died on February 8, 2003, at the age of seventy-one. Her Social Security record identifies her last residence as San Diego, California, ZIP Code 92114, with her last benefit associated with ZIP Code 92113.⁷
Her age at death provides additional evidence for the 1931 birth year. Born March 10, 1931, Sophie was just one month short of her seventy-second birthday when she died.
Her 1955 marriage certificate, however, gives March 10, 1935, and identifies her as twenty years old.⁴ Because the records conflict, the discrepancy should remain part of her documented history rather than being silently resolved.
Taken together, the available evidence presently favors March 10, 1931, while recognizing that Sophie herself—or the person supplying information for her marriage record—reported 1935.
Legacy
Sophie’s life followed a path that carried her increasingly farther from the rural Mississippi community in which she had been raised.
As a child, she attended school while growing up among ten brothers and sisters in Sam and Lillian Evans’s Newton County household. By nineteen, she was living with her sister Lorene in Smith County and contributing forty hours a week of unpaid labor to the family farm.
Within five years, her circumstances had changed dramatically.
Sophie had moved to New Orleans, where she exchanged farm labor for paid employment as a nurse’s aide. There she married John Calvin Dungen, an insurance agent, and established a household of her own. Later, her journey continued westward until San Diego, California, became her home.
Her life therefore traces a remarkable geographic path:
Newton County → Smith County → New Orleans → San Diego.
That journey also places Sophie’s individual story within the broader history of twentieth-century Black migration. Her movement was not simply the familiar rural-South-to-Northern-city route. Instead, she moved first within Mississippi, then to the urban Gulf South, and ultimately west to California.
The surviving records cannot tell us everything about the experiences, opportunities, or personal decisions that carried Sophie across those places. They do, however, preserve the broad outline of a life transformed by movement.
The young girl who began life in a large farming household in Newton County eventually lived more than 1,700 miles from Lawrence, Mississippi. In doing so, Sophia “Sophie” Evans Dungen carried one branch of Sam and Lillian Evans’s family from the rural communities of east-central Mississippi to the Pacific Coast.
