Life Story

Alene Lewis Adams was born on February 10, 1914, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to Lonnie Albert Lewis (1888-1920) and Estella Jackson Lewis (1887-1969). She married Willie Lee Adams (1906-1970), also known as Bill, on November 12, 1937, in Newton County. From this union, four children were born. The children are as follows:

Alene’s father and grandfather were among those migrating to northern cities to find better opportunities. Her father found foundry work in Detroit, Michigan. However, at the age of 29 years old, her father passed away in Michigan of influenza and pneumonia in 1920. The family moved back to Kosciusko after Lonnie’s death.

By 1940, Alene had completed her education up to the 4th grade. In 1950, she became a schoolteacher at the Decatur Negro School. Alene also dedicated her time as a poll worker for the Democratic Party. She was actively involved in her church, Pine Ridge, representing it in the Negro Newton County Home Demonstration Club.

Alene passed away on April 10, 1995, and was laid to rest at the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Decatur, MS.
