Life Story

Fannie Wash Williams-Arterberry was born in approximately 1876 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Mary Wash (1844-?). Around 1889, at the age of about fifteen, she married Andrew Williams (1865-1910), and from this union, thirteen children were born. The children were as follows:

  • Minnie Williams (1890-?)
  • Elbert Williams, Sr. (1891-1979)
  • Albert Williams (1891-?)
  • Louisa Williams (1894-?)
  • Mance Williams (1896-?)
  • Clara Williams (1897-?)
  • Andrew Williams, Jr. (1899-?)
  • Vera Williams Jones (1902-1988)
  • Ora Williams (1903-?)
  • Mary Williams (1904-?)
  • Lee Williams (1907-?)
  • Exel Williams (1908-1988)
  • Arena Williams (1908-?)

Fannie’s husband, Andrew, died before the 1910 census was taken, leaving Fannie to rear their children alone. Fannie provided for her children through farming and rented a house on a farm. The 1920 census shows three additional children of Fannie, though the identity of their father is not known. The children were as follows:

  • Walter McCarty (1917-?)
  • Cassie R. McCarty (1918-?)
  • Hazel L. McCarty (1919-?)

By 1920, Fannie had remarried Melvin Arterberry (1878-?). The household included some of Fannie’s children as well as Melvin’s children from his earlier marriage to Ella (1880-?). Fannie passed away in 1932 and is interred at the graveyard of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
