Life Story
Mariah Evans was born around 1861 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Daniel Evans (1832-?) and Elizabeth Evans (1835-?). Growing up in a rural setting, she embraced the life of a farmer, contributing to her family’s livelihood through hard work and dedication to the land.
Tragically, her life came to an untimely end on March 29, 1916, due to complications that arose during childbirth. The informant on her death certificate was her younger brother, Miles Evans, who was likely overwhelmed by the circumstances of her passing. He indicated that Mariah’s father was Alford Chapman, but it is probable that he was mistaken and intended to clarify that Alford was the father of Mariah’s unborn child, adding a layer of complexity to her family’s history.
According to the 1870 census, it is confirmed that Mariah’s father was Daniel Evans, which helps establish her roots in the community. The burial location was also incomplete on the death certificate, creating challenges for her descendants and researchers who wish to honor her memory, making it difficult to ascertain where Mariah was buried and ensuring her story is remembered.
