Life Story
Maude Lindsey Evans was born on September 19, 1912, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Andy Lindsey (1889–1966) and Martha Moore Lindsey (1890–1967). She was raised in the Altare community, a close-knit rural area where family, faith, and hard work formed the foundation of daily life. From a young age, Maude was an active member of the Altare Missionary Baptist Church, where she developed a strong Christian faith that remained with her throughout her life. She completed the eighth grade of elementary school, a noteworthy accomplishment for a young woman in her generation.
In 1930, Maude married George Washington Wesley (1912–?), and together they welcomed three children:
- George William Wesley (1930–1996)
- Leve Wesley (1932–?)
- Lovie Mae Wesley (1930–2019)
By 1940, Maude was listed as a widow, a loss that profoundly shaped her life. In the years that followed, she later married Sam (S.M.) Evans, the son of Pete Evans (1888–1988) and Lula McDonald Evans (1893–2006). Through this union, Maude became part of another longstanding family line within the Newton County community.
Eventually, Maude relocated to Flint, Michigan, where she joined the Everlasting Missionary Baptist Church. There she remained a devoted and energetic student of the Bible, known for her steadfast faith and kindness toward others. Her spiritual life and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
On Thursday, April 14, 1994, Maude passed away at the age of 81 at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Visitation was held at the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and funeral services took place at Everlasting Missionary Baptist Church in Dupont, Michigan, with Rev. Otha Fordham, Sr. officiating. She was laid to rest at Flint Memorial Park.
Maude leaves behind a loving legacy of family and faith. She was survived by her daughter, Lovie Mae Evans, and son, George William Wesley, both of Flint; seven stepchildren—Kate Chapman, Rose L. (Jimmy D.) May, Josephine, Charles (Gladys) Wesley, all of Newton, MS; James, Ora Lee Wesley, and Sally McKenzie, all of Detroit; her sister, Marie Ford of St. Louis, Missouri; 15 grandchildren, 21 step-grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, George Washington Wesley and S.M. Evans; her parents, Andy and Martha Lindsey; two stepsons, Gleen Allen and W.C. Wesley; and two great-grandchildren, Elliot Hinshaw Tingle and LaDoris Dio.
Maude’s life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and family devotion. From her early years in Altare to her later life in Michigan, she remained deeply rooted in her spiritual beliefs and the values instilled in her by her Mississippi upbringing. Her memory continues to live on in the hearts of her many descendants and the enduring stories of the Lindsey, Wesley, and Evans families.
