Life Story
Melvin Evans, Sr. was born on April 2, 1938, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Ambus Arrington (1916-1971) and Mattie Mae Norman Evans (1916-2002). He was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Newton, MS. Melvin’s first marriage was to Betty Jean Cole Evans (1944-1988), with whom he spent 27 years before she preceded him in death. From this union, two children were born as follows:
- Sylvia Evans (1962-1999)
- Melvin Evans, Jr. (1963-?)
Years later, Melvin remarried Brenda Wheaton, and from this union, they had two stepchildren:
- Adam Wheaton
- Aaron Wheaton
Melvin passed away on March 15, 1996, at his residence in Newton, MS. Funeral services were held at the Morning Star Baptist Church, with Rev. Shawn Croft officiating.
Survivors of Melvin include his wife, Mrs. Brenda Evans of Newton, MS; one son, Melvin Evans, Jr., and one daughter, Sylvia Evans, both of Newton; his mother, Mrs. Mattie Mae Evans of Newton; one brother, Calvin Evans of Decatur; six sisters: Catherine Evans Kidd of Lawrence, Laura Thigpen of Ellisville, MS, Dorothy Evans, Pecoluia Laster, and Mary Dean Davis, all of Newton, and Betty Lou Dean of Nashville, TN; and two stepsons, Adam Wheaton and Aaron Wheaton of Newton. Interment was made in Morning Star Cemetery.
