Life Story

Thomas Love was born on June 18, 1932, to Sank Love (1907–?) and Lula Hughes (1913–?), in Newton County, Mississippi. He was the grandson of John Hughes (1874–1966) and Arbella Arrington Hughes (1880–1959) on his mother’s side, and of George Love (1859–?) and Lizzie Bailey (1875–?) on his father’s side.

Raised in a family deeply rooted in the Altare community, Thomas grew up surrounded by faith, family, and the traditions that defined rural life in mid-20th-century Mississippi. Those early years instilled in him the values of perseverance, humility, and hard work—traits that would serve him throughout his life.

As a young man, Thomas relocated to Chicago, Illinois, joining the many Mississippians who sought new opportunities in the urban North. There, he built a life among a vibrant community of family and friends who shared his Southern heritage and strong sense of connection. Known for his warm spirit and steady nature, Thomas made a lasting impression on those around him, leaving behind memories of kindness, laughter, and integrity.

Tragically, Thomas passed away on November 28, 1984, in Chicago at the age of 53. His passing was deeply felt by all who knew him. Following his death, he was returned home to Newton County, Mississippi, where he was laid to rest in the Altare Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery—the same sacred ground where generations of his family had been buried before him.

Thomas Love’s life stands as a testament to the enduring bonds of family and community that stretch from Mississippi to Chicago and beyond. His memory continues to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, a reflection of the quiet strength and love that defined his journey.
