Life Story

Iola Evans McCune was born in 1912 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Joe Evans, Jr. (born about 1871) and Lizzie “Jennie” Loper Evans (born about 1866). She was raised in the rural Altare community of Newton County, where her family worked as farmers. As a young woman, Iola labored on the family farm, contributing to the household’s livelihood through fieldwork and domestic chores.

In adulthood, Iola married Albert McCune (born about 1908). Upon marriage, her occupation was listed as keeping house, a reflection of her role as a homemaker and caretaker for her growing family. From this union, the following fourteen children were born:

  • Mary Helen McCune (1938–2004)
  • Carl McCune (1940–1993)
  • Mamie Lee McCune (1941–1992)
  • Lee Otha McCune (1942–2000)
  • Charles E. McCune (1944–1999)
  • Joe L. McCune (1945–?)
  • Jimmie C. McCune (1946–?)
  • Ester McCune (1946–?)
  • Jewel McCune (1948–2006)
  • Else McCune
  • Walter McCune
  • Mary McCune
  • Bobby McCune
  • Sarah McCune

Mrs. Iola McCune was a lifelong resident of Newton County and a devoted member of the Holy Church of God, where she faithfully served until her death.

She passed away on Saturday, August 29, 1998, at Newton Hospital, at the age of 86. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 3, 1998, at 2:00 p.m. from the Holy Church of God, with Bishop George Roberts officiating. Interment followed in the Altare Cemetery, with Progressive Funeral Home of Newton in charge of arrangements.

Survivors included five daughters — Mary H. McCune, Else (Bishop) Roberts, Jewel Page, Mary (Claudie) Beason, and Sarah (Walter) Johnson, all of Newton — and five sons — Lee (Bernice) McCune, Charles (Georgia) McCune, and Joe (Oral) McCune, all of Newton; Jimmy (Sharon) McCune of Decatur; and Bobby (Jettie) McCune of Jackson. She was also the grandmother of forty grandchildren, the great-grandmother of thirty-five great-grandchildren, and the matriarch to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, and flower bearers were her granddaughters.
