Elvira “Virinda” Evans Walker was born around 1887 in the Altare community of Newton County, Mississippi, to Benjamin Evans (1840–1909) and Josephine Walker (1852–?). The Evans and Walker families were among the early settlers of the Altare area, helping shape its legacy of faith and perseverance.
Growing up, Elvira worked as a farm laborer alongside her parents and siblings on the family’s land. Her death certificate was completed by Will Evans, who served as the informant, reflecting the close kinship networks that connected the Evans and Walker families.
She was laid to rest in the Altare Missionary Baptist Church Graveyard, among generations of family and neighbors who shared in her life and faith. The resting place, nestled within the heart of the community she helped sustain, stands as a lasting symbol of her dedication to family and God.
