A Life Remembered: The Journey of Larry Walker

Early Life and Family Heritage

Larry Walker was born on December 12, 1952, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Willie Walker (1908–1968) and Ruby Lee English (1915–?). He was raised in the close-knit Altare community, a place where faith, family, and hard work were the foundations of daily life.

As the son of the Walker and English families—both deeply rooted in Newton County’s history—Larry grew up surrounded by the enduring traditions of community service and faith that had long defined his ancestors. His early years were shaped by the values of respect, compassion, and perseverance, instilled by parents who believed in the strength of family and the power of faith.

Life and Work

In his adulthood, Larry carried those same principles into every part of his life. Known for his humility and kindness, he maintained close ties to his family and community even as he sought new opportunities beyond Newton County.

He eventually relocated to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he built a life marked by quiet strength and steady purpose. Whether among friends, coworkers, or neighbors, Larry was known for his gentle spirit and his willingness to lend a helping hand.

Faith and Legacy

Faith was a guiding force throughout Larry’s life. Though his journey took him beyond the Altare community, his heart remained rooted in its spiritual legacy—one defined by the Altare Missionary Baptist Church, where generations of Walkers had worshipped, served, and been laid to rest.

On February 19, 2018, Larry Walker passed away at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of love, humility, and quiet faith. He was laid to rest in the Altare Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, returning home to the sacred ground that had shaped his family’s story for over a century.

Sidebar: The Walker Legacy in Altare

The Walker family of Newton County stands among the foundational lineages of the Altare community, tracing their roots to the post-emancipation era of the late 19th century. Through generations, they cultivated the land, served in the church, and upheld the values of faith and perseverance.

Larry Walker’s life represents the continuation of this proud heritage—an echo of the same devotion, humility, and familial strength that defined his ancestors. His return to rest at Altare symbolizes a full circle: a life begun and ended in the soil of his heritage, united forever with the community that gave him his start.
