Life Story
Early Life
Sylvia Rigsby was born on August 28, 1965, in Newton, Mississippi, to Grady Rigsby, Sr. (1923–1985) and Lucille Walker Rigsby (1923–1997). She grew up in a loving and active household and was baptized at an early age at Morning Star M.B. Church, where she sang in the choir and remained a faithful member throughout her life.
As a young student, Sylvia excelled academically and athletically. She was recognized in the Newton County newspapers for her achievements in reading contests, track meets, and Special Olympics events. She earned first place in track, second place in long jump, and additional honors in relay and throwing events—showing leadership and determination even in her youth.
Marriage & Family
Sylvia was first united in marriage to Tim Evans.
She later entered her second marriage with Tony Watts, to whom she remained devoted.
From this union, two children were born:
- Tommy Amos Watts
- Antonius Watts
Her family was the center of her life, and she was a loving wife, mother, sister, and aunt.
Career & Community Involvement
Sylvia’s early newspaper features reflect her active participation in school and community programs. She represented Newton High School in district events, showing strong talent in athletics. Her commitment to her church, her family, and her community defined who she was—faithful, hardworking, and dedicated.
Death
Sylvia Rigsby passed away on October 18, 2006. She was preceded in death by her father, Grady Rigsby, Sr., and her twin brother, Jerome Rigsby.
Burial
She is laid to rest at the Evans Cemetery in Newton County, Mississippi, among generations of family and loved ones.
Legacy
Sylvia is remembered for her warm spirit, her love of music and worship, her athletic gifts, and her devotion to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, grace, and enduring love.
