Birth and Family
Thelby Johnson was born prematurely on October 18, 1929, in Newton County, Mississippi. He was the child of Shelby Johnson (1895–?) and Lula Johnson, members of a local family connected to the Evans Cemetery community.
Short Life and Passing
Because of his premature birth, Thelby lived only briefly. His father, Shelby Johnson, served as the informant on the death certificate, documenting the family’s loss at a time when infant survival in rural Mississippi was extremely fragile due to limited medical access and high rates of premature births among African American families.
Burial
Thelby was laid to rest at the Evans Cemetery, a resting place shared by many infants, elders, and community members whose lives shaped the Altare, St. John, and Mt. Moriah communities.
