Wendell Robinson was born in Newton County, Mississippi, on November 25, 1962, and grew into a remarkable athlete, serviceman, and respected son of the Newton community. He was the son of Mrs. Bernice Robinson and Mr. Millard Robinson, both of Newton, whose guidance, faith, and encouragement shaped his character and ambitions. Wendell graduated from Newton High School in 1980, leaving behind an unforgettable mark on the school’s athletic programs.

Early Life and Athletic Excellence
From childhood, Wendell displayed both natural talent and fierce determination. At just six years old, he won First Prize in the Neil Horn Ford “Pass, Punt, and Kick” Contest—already showing the competitive spirit that would define his youth.
During his high school years, Wendell became one of Newton High School’s standout multi-sport athletes:
Basketball
- Named Most Improved Player
- Contributed strong defensive and offensive performances for both the B-Team and the varsity Tigers
- Frequently recognized in local newspapers for scoring, rebounds, and leadership
- Helped carry Newton teams through regional tournaments, including tight matchups against Hickory, Bay Springs, Decatur, and others

Track & Field
A versatile and powerful competitor:
- Competed in the 100-yard dash, mile relay, 440-yard relay, and several field events
- Placed in major meets including Madison-Ridgeland, Choctaw Central, and Forest Invitational
- Ran alongside Marcus Evans, Willie Townsend, James Moore, Michael Evans, and other Newton standouts
- Served as a key member of relay teams consistently placing among the top competitors in the district
Football
- Played various positions on offense and defense
- Known for his speed, strength, and disciplined game execution
- Appeared in the Newton Record sports coverage for both B-Team and varsity performance
Wendell’s high school years were filled with grit, teamwork, and sportsmanship—earning him the respect of his coaches, teammates, and the entire Newton community.
Military Service
After high school, Wendell answered the call to serve his country with honor.
United States Marines
- Completed training at the U.S. Army Air Defense School in Fort Bliss, Texas, where he mastered man-portable air defense systems such as the Redeye and Stinger missile systems
- Served with distinction in the Persian Gulf, demonstrating courage and dedication during overseas deployment
- Listed among the community’s servicemen recognized for bravery during the Gulf operations
His military career reflected the same discipline and perseverance he had shown in athletics—earning him admiration both at home and abroad.

Later Life and Legacy
Following his military service, Wendell remained a proud son of Newton County. Family, faith, and community continued to anchor his life. His warmth, humility, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Wendell Robinson passed away on June 5, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of service, athletic excellence, and integrity. He was laid to rest at Corinth Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, where family, friends, and loved ones gathered to honor his life and memory.
A Life Remembered
Wendell’s story is one of determination—from the athletic fields of Newton High School to the deserts of the Persian Gulf. He lived with purpose, discipline, and dignity. His journey continues to inspire the community that raised him and the many people whose lives he touched.
