Shirley Chapman was born about 1952 in Newton County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Willie Grace Walker Chapman (1927–2000) and Nelson Chapman, and the granddaughter of William Walker (1882–1948) and Cherrie Wash Walker (1903–1991). She was raised within a large, close-knit family connected to the St. John and Pleasant Grove communities.
Family
At the time of her death, Shirley lived near the home of her grandmother, Cherrie Wash Walker, in east Newton, close to the Newton Vocational School. Newspaper accounts note that she and her siblings were frequently in the care of extended family, reflecting the shared caregiving common within the community.
Death
Shirley Chapman passed away in September 1955 at the age of three following a tragic accidental gunshot wound. A coroner’s jury ruled her death accidental.
