Life Story
Rose Evans Johnson was born around 1902 to Oliver Evans (1876–1916) and Ida Cooley (1885–?) in the close-knit Altare community of Newton County, Mississippi. Growing up in a rural and faith-centered environment, Rose was shaped by the traditions, hard work, and strong moral values that defined Southern life during the early twentieth century.
On January 11, 1921, she married Floyd Johnson (1897–1968), beginning what they hoped would be a long and fulfilling life together. Their union symbolized the merging of two respected local families and the promise of a shared future rooted in faith and perseverance.
Tragically, Rose’s life was cut short when she passed away on January 28, 1925, at only twenty-three years of age. Her early death brought deep sorrow to her family and community, who remembered her gentle spirit and the warmth she brought into their lives. She was laid to rest in the serene graveyard of Altare Missionary Baptist Church, a place of enduring significance to her family and community.
Henry Evans, believed to be a close relative, served as the informant on her death certificate, a gesture that reflected the strong family ties and mutual care that bound the Altare community together in both joy and grief. Though her time on earth was brief, Rose’s memory endures as part of the enduring legacy of the Evans and Johnson families who helped shape the spiritual and cultural fabric of Newton County.
