Life Story

The Brief Life of Charlie Lewis Evans

Charlie Lewis Evans was born on October 25, 1925, in Mississippi, the son of Thomas Evans and Armanda Harris Evans.¹ He was born into the growing Evans family that would become associated with the rural communities of Newton and neighboring Neshoba counties.

Charlie’s life was tragically brief. On March 1, 1926, he died at Lawrence in Newton County at the age of only four months and five days. His Mississippi death certificate recorded the cause of death as influenza.¹

Charlie was buried the following day, March 2, 1926, in Lawrence.¹

A Child Between the Censuses

Charlie Lewis’s brief life is particularly important when reconstructing the children of Thomas and Mandy Evans.

He had not yet been born when the 1920 federal census was taken. By the time census takers returned in 1930, Charlie had been dead for four years. Consequently, he could never appear as a child in either enumeration.

Without his death certificate, his place in the family could easily have been overlooked.

His record therefore adds another known child to the family of Thomas and Mandy Harris Evans and preserves the name of a little boy whose entire life lasted only a few months.
