Life Story

Laid to Rest: Evans Graveyard – Newton County, Mississippi

Early Life and Family

Cora Walker Evans was born on November 25, 1875, in Newton County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Larriet Walker (1830–?), a member of an early post–Civil War generation whose family roots stretched through the rural communities of east Mississippi.

Cora grew up during a period when most African American families relied on agriculture and shared labor to support their households. These early experiences shaped her life’s work and the values she passed down to her children.

Marriage and Children

Cora married Archie Evans (1871–1942), and together they formed one of the significant family lines connected to the Evans community and the Evans Graveyard.

The following children were born to their union:

These children went on to establish their own families throughout Newton County and neighboring communities, carrying the Walker and Evans legacy forward for generations.

Work and Daily Life

Cora worked as a farm laborer on the home farm, contributing directly to the family’s livelihood. Her days would have been marked by physical labor, household management, and the constant tasks required to sustain a rural farming family in the early 20th century. Her efforts helped build a foundation of stability and continuity for her children and grandchildren.

Passing and Legacy

Cora Walker Evans passed away on November 25, 1929—on her 54th birthday. She was laid to rest in the Evans Graveyard, a resting place shared by many members of the extended Evans family.

Her life reflects the strength, endurance, and family-centered values that defined the households of Altare and the surrounding Newton County communities. Through her children and their descendants, Cora’s legacy remains deeply rooted in the history of the Evans family and the land they cultivated and called home.
