Early Life and Family Background
Dudley Evans was born on March 10, 1896, in Newton County, Mississippi. He was the son of Archie Evans (1871–1942) and Cora Walker Evans (1875–1929), members of one of the foundational families of the Evans community. Growing up in a rural farming household, Dudley was surrounded by strong family networks that anchored life in the Altare and Mt. Moriah areas.
Education
By 1940, Dudley had completed the 6th grade of elementary school, a significant accomplishment at a time when educational opportunities for rural African American children were sharply limited by segregation and agricultural demands.
Marriage and Children
Dudley married Lela Billingsley (1895–1983). Together they raised a large and close-knit family. Their known children were:

Work and Daily Life
Dudley spent his entire life working as a farm laborer on the home farm, continuing the agricultural tradition that defined the Evans family for generations. His work involved long days of planting, harvesting, livestock care, and maintaining the land that sustained the extended family.
His steady labor reflects the perseverance, responsibility, and family-centered values shared across the rural Black communities of early 20th-century Mississippi.
Later Years, Passing, and Legacy
Dudley Evans passed away on August 9, 1988, at the age of 92. He was laid to rest in the historic Evans Cemetery, where many members of his family and his ancestors are also buried.
Dudley’s long life—spanning Reconstruction’s aftermath, Jim Crow, the Great Migration era, World War I, World War II, and the Civil Rights Movement—embodies the endurance and strength of the Evans family. His legacy continues through his children, grandchildren, and the deep roots the Evans family established in Newton County.
