Life Story


Birth & Family

Delcia Whitehead, also recorded as Litha and Lily on census records, was born on March 26, sometime between 1902 and 1905, in Newton County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Ambrose Whitehead (1876–1960) and Marietta Walker Whitehead (1879–1968), members of a well-established family connected to church and community life in the county.


Education

At the time of her death, Delcia was attending school, indicating that her family placed value on education despite the challenges faced by Black children in rural Mississippi during the early twentieth century.


Death

Delcia Whitehead passed away on February 29, 1920, from influenza, with pneumonia listed as a secondary contributory cause. The informant on her death certificate was Spencer Bobbett, and the certificate was signed by Dr. Stennis.


Burial

She is laid to rest at Union Chapel United Methodist Church graveyard.
